November: Love at First Line

Posted: 4 November 2026

As the days grow shorter and the evenings colder, November invites us to slow down. It’s the perfect time of year to curl up with a book, embrace a little mystery, and rediscover the simple pleasure of getting lost in a story.

As part of the National Year of Reading, the Library is encouraging you to step outside your usual reading habits and try something unexpected.

Love at First Line Display

9th – 20th November

From 9th to 20th November, visit the library for our Love at First Line Display, a celebration of spontaneity and the magic of beginnings.

Here’s the twist: you won’t know the title or the author.

Each book is wrapped to conceal its cover. Your choice will be guided not by reputation or familiarity, but by our intriguing sentences typed by our librarians.

It’s a chance to:

  • Discover authors you may never have picked up otherwise
  • Step outside your comfort zone
  • Reignite the excitement of choosing a book purely on instinct
  • Fall in love with a story from its very first words

Why the First Line?

In the spirit of the National Year of Reading, this display celebrates reading as discovery. It removes assumptions and encourages openness. Sometimes the best books are the ones we didn’t plan to read.
